Running mds_backup will backup the entire mds including the cma's - you can
exclude logs (check CP sk solution) but you should backup CMA's individually
- like this 'tar cvf $MDSDIR/customers/CMA_NAME' even though you should be
able to untar mdsbackupp to get individual CMA's - however to restore
individual CMA, individual backup will be more efficient and helpful - you
can just back these minimums for the individual CMA's $CPDIR/conf and
$CPDIR/database and $FWDIR/conf. If you have any hacks made to the lib
files, I would like you to maintain a doc and then add them manually after
restoring the CMA - the reason is that these lib files keep getting updated
even with a HFA and when you restore the libs from some previous version,
you will end up with potentially issues.

As far as running mds_backup is concerned, ideally it should be done during
off peak hours as you need to disconnect the GUI's - makes sense you should
not be making any config changes when you are backing up the config.
Depending upon how big the environment is, performance is hit on the mds and
the process can take some time as well but for any emergent reasons, if you
have to do an mds backup working hours, you can go ahead without any risk of
crashing, though! Ensure everyone is logged off from their GUI's.

Subject: [FW-1] Question on Provider-1

Hi,

We are using the Checkpoint Provider-1(On secure
platform) for managing the multiple firewalls at
different locations. The question now is about the
mds_backup utility in Provider-1 which is for taking
the back-up of the Provider-1.

1. Whether running the utility mds_back-up during the
working hours has any effect on the performance of

the system.

2. Whether this utility takes the backup of all the
CMA's including MDS or do we need to take

independently for each CMA.

3. Can restore the CMA if we have the
Conf/Database/Lib directories are backed up.

Thanks,
sekhar
