Floodgate works very well. I actually use it to keep the HTTP/FTP/SMTP
traffic from stealing all of the bandwidth from the VPNs. I set a Floodgate
rule to apply to encrypted traffic only (a check box), set my guaranteed
minimum for encrypted traffic and away I go.

You could set a rule to an absolute maximum as well.

Subject: [FW-1] Floodgate vs. Packeteer
Date: Tue, 22 Feb 2005 10:40:37 -0500

Hello -

We have a FW1-VPN1 Cluster XL, NG R55/SPLAT and are running BGP with two 12
MB ISP connections. The servers have fast dual Xeons and 2MB RAM. We are
considering doing a site-to-site VPN with a client as opposed to a
dedicated
line. The bandwidth requirements will be very high so we may increase each
of our our ISPs to a 45 MB because the price is just as good for a full T3
as it is for a frac T3 of 18 MB or more.

We are looking at some bandwidth management options to keep the VPN to this
client from grabbing all the bandwidth when a large file transfer kicks in.
I am looking at Packeteer, but would be interested in hearing input about
Floodgate from real-life users as opposed to just a sales pitch.

Thanks!

Pete Ramb
