Can you run "free" and see what that says?
Ex:
total used free shared buffers cached
Mem: 774144 638560 135584 0 81784 272680
-/+ buffers/cache: 284096 490048
Swap: 4064436 13672 4050764
This isn't a SPLAT box, but you can see a lot of memory is allocated to
disk read cache. It gets reused when needed.
Also look at /proc/meminfo (esp if you don't have `free` to parse it for
you) and /proc/slabinfo to see where things are allocated.
