Be careful - sometimes ethtool may not take effect at all.   Your
fallback is to edit the etc/modules.conf file and force the card's
settings that way.  Personally, I always use that for stability
purposes.  Most problematic is the duplex settings because you may
*think* it's working because you're plugged into a switch which still
notifies its capabilities to the NIC even when the NIC is still in
auto-sense mode (i.e. ethtool did nothing, but reported no errors).
