How well do you know your IP networking? Do you understand subnetting,
masks, default
gateways, static routes, ARPs? Do you understand the difference between
static NAT and hide
mode NAT? Do you completely understand services and ports? Can you
troubleshoot problems
with all of the above? If so, and if you understand routers, all FW1
is, is a router with
an inspection application layer. Front end is very intuitive.
Everything is based on
source, destination, and service. All object oriented. Documentation
on Checkpoint's site
is pretty good. Look for their 'Getting Started Guide'. Lot's of third
party docs available
too on firewalls in general. Best platforms are Solaris, SPLAT on Linux
on HPs, Nokia. Look
at Checkpoints platform selection guide. There are preinstalled
appliances available. Find
a reseller near you and talk to them.

Subject: Re: [FW-1] Firewall-1 Questions

Thanks for the reply.. Is it really that difficult? I would have thought
this type of configuration would be fairly simple.. Is there any
documentation that would help someone using it for the first time? Also,
what's the cost for the software approximately and what H/W
configuration does it normally run on or run the best on?

Thanks again

yes you should have at least two nics.

But you really should find someone who knows how to
setup the product properly.
