I have had big issues with SmartCentre controlling IP40's.
As such would not recommend it, especially not with so many.
Your chances of issues are greatly increased.

Nothing that large from my side.
I have implemented R55 together with a number of IP40's running Edge.
I have found that the edges themselves can sometimes be a problem with
retrieving policies, and other times crashing all together, the only
way around that was to re install and establish comms back to the
Management Station.
Overall I found it works well most of the time, providing the policies
are fairly simple.
