This makes my confusion a little larger.
Uname gives me "Unknown Command".
Ver gives me Checkpoint Secureplatform NG with Application Intelligence Build 142. Fw ver gives me Checkpoint VPN-1 & Firewall-1 NG with Application Intelligence Build 315.
I don't get it.

that seems obvious to some people. From my firewall itself, ver gives me

Well, if you have SPLAT running, it will tell you right away in your

If you still unsure, go to the firewall and issue either of these commands:

What would I need to get to upgrade to R55, and what benefits would I get

Well, you're late... NGX R60 is the latest version of the product. As of reasons
for upgrading you may take a look hre:

You should be able to upgrade free of charge, as long as you've
Software Subcription (sort of maintenance that you optionally pay per
year- if you pay it you get the upgrades free - if you don't pay for
it you're not entitled to upgrade to new versions).

Your User Center account should tell you more about this.

If you had no clue on what I was talking about, then should be a good
moment to contact your reseller to ask them such stuff. If something
seems weird or confusing, you still have the mailing list..
