Errors related to Mass Storage during Splat installs are very obviously
stated.  You get no error before the untimely death of your install.

I have experienced errors with the ramdisk not loading before (machine was
using a perfectly fine IDE drive).  Resolved it with new memory.  Maybe I
just got lucky, but try swapping a stick or two of mem from that machine.
Beyond that, however, you may run into issues with SATA mass storage device
during the install.  But you will know that is the case when you see the
error message.
