Hey Guys:
We're currently running VSX with multiple virtual firewalls defined.
We're trying to determine the # of Bytes of traffic received and sent on a
VSX interface but since Since SmartView Monitor is not supported on the VSX
platform as yet, we've resorted to running ifconfig -a at command line to
see the total TX and RX bytes sent and received on the physical interface.
Problem is that the total TX and RX bytes do not correspond with our
expected volume of traffic. Furthermore, we've seen instances where the TX
and RX counters have been reset. Is there any reliable way to obtain the
amount of data passing on a VSX interface over a period of time?

What version of VSX are you running ? I have VSX NGX and I can use SmartView monitor without a problem to view network statistics.

Furthermore
can someone explain why the counters reset themselves periodically?

because they are 32bit integers and therefore they reset at 4 gigabytes of traffic.
