It does not require one. But if you happen to have one in between and you can not get around it then visitor mode is the trick to still be able to setup a SecureClient/SecuRemote connection.

Drawbacks:
 - less stable (more prone to disconnect on policy install
 - more CPU intensive. (double encryption)
 - Assumes you do not need to use https on port 443 on the firewall
        (But shifting it to another port on SPLAT or IPSO is peanuts)
