I am currently using r61 on my gateways which protect our website. I
don't have smart defense or web intelligence services turned on at the
moment. Recently I have seen increasing amount of DDoS attacks against
our site. I just wanted an advice on how effective it would be to turn
smart defence and or web intelligence to use against the mitigation of
these attacks. Is there any downside of these services in terms of
processor or memory utilisation.

You cannot protect yourself from DOS/DDOS.

What you can do is try to mitigate it to some extent.
If the requests to your webserver are valid then there is nothing you can do. If the requests are malformed, you can try to enable smartdefense and see what can be done about it.
