I had a similar problem once on a Nortel switch where they had set a 
span/mirror port in some "wrong mode".

I don't know the real reason . The problem disapear after disconnecting
the switch and using a crossover cable. I suppose problems with
autonegotiation or some other strange behavior of that switch.

And No, I dont will connect the switch again to find out the real reason.
