The main reasons I can think of:
 1. Experience with 1 platform exceeds all others.
 2. Divide and conquer. (Solaris management is done by UNIX group, SPLAT
is unknown and may not need to be defered to anothe group.)

All in all I have seen some very sane and some very silly reasons to split
OS management from Application management on SmartCenters. And sometimes it
is hard to tell in which category a reasons qualifies. ;-)
