IMHO http://www.vulnerabilities.org/analysis.html is a good alternative to
securityspace. You can easily chose between a simple nmap scan or a nessus
scan without registering or anything.
As for checking that port 25 is listening on the firewall, the simplest
thing is to telnet to port 25 of the firewall and see if it responds. This
can easiest be done from a shell account on the internet, but also from the
inside if your firewall rule includes the internal net as the source.

Try running an external audit/port scan of your server.
As an example, http://www.securityspace.com provides a number
of auditing options, ranging from simple port scans, to full
vulnerability assessments.
