You need to install the 4.1 management station with backwards compatibility at the moment of the initial installation. It is not possible to install the backwards compatibility module after the fact, hence your 4.1 cannot manage the 4.0. I'd upgrade, it would be much simpler to do that then to go through the pain of re-installing the management station.
