I was able to finally figure out my problem with HP Unix ftp and
Checkpoint NG.

The HPUX ftp program issues a SYST command after connecting and before
login when auto-login is turned off with the -n option flag. With NG, the
SYST before USER was confusing the firewall and it was failing user
authentication.

I found a new option flag for HPUX ftp in the man pages for HPUX 11i but
it works on my HPUX 11.00 servers also. It does not work on HPUX 10.20.

-c When this option is set, the SYST and TYPE calls are not made by the
ftp client to the server upon establishing a connection.
