Both stem from the FWRULES script by Anonymous / Stefan Moser / Sean O'Neill and me. The "official" version is fw1rules which underwent a major internal design rewrite from 6.x -> 7.x in December 2001 (http://www.wyae.de/software/fw1rules/HISTORY.txt) fwrules641 was forked July 2001 from FWRules V6.1.2 by Johta Nakatsuma / Stephen Poon - unfortunately the changes never mnade it back to me. After I discovered the (then a few months old code) I changed the name to FW1Rules to mark that forking and new codebase. So beware - there are overlapping versions after 6.1.2 that both run under the same name FWRULES. Which is best? Mine of course... ;-) Things fwrules 6.4.1 does better: - hyperlinking within the output handles name doubling better - firewall objects with interface output - Authentication handling Things FW1Rules 7.3.1 does better: - dump of properties/objects/rules etc. into TXT or CSV files - dump data into templates (easy to configure, a number of predefined available) - easier to customize (due to separating reading and output routines) - dump of unused objects (great for cleaning up) - a number of output selection & sorting criteria - userDB support (seems to be buggy, though) Hyperlinkling and interface handling are currently being integrated into FW1Rules 7.3.then2, so the advantage of fwrules641 is melting to authentication handling. As for NG compatibility: FW1Rules is at least partially working and is being actively developed towards full compatibility.
