>From Checkpoint:
"FireWall-1 has had a lot of protection from attacks built in for years;
many of these were automatic and were not exposed in the gui nor did they
receive special logging. This made it difficult for users to understand
exactly what attacks FireWall-1 blocked; now, in addition to adding new
blocks we've made it easy for administrators to see exactly what's being
blocked and, in cases where there are configuration options, to correctly
set and apply those options. Simple, straightforward, GUI-based
configuration allows easier and more consistent configuration, plus
SmartDefense provides information about each attack (clearly not available
with dbedit).

In addition, SmartDefense adds some substantial new blocking and logging
capabilities, with more being developed quickly; the most notable of these
is the configurable kernel-based HTTP worm blocking which allows
specification (using regular expressions) of a large number of malicious
HTTP strings to block, blocking of non-ASCII characters in URLs, and similar
checks with very high performance.

As noted, that static components of SmartDefense are only half the story;
Check Point has a subscription service providing online updating of
information on network security risks as well as blocks for those risks."
