If only it were that simple. The distribution of our users vs proxy
servers isn't that even. It isn't even close. We have some sites with more
then 1500 users per proxy and some sites with less then 40 users per proxy.
All sites perform well and we have had no major problems at a local level.
Now the proxy array (10 x Compaq PL1600's) which all of the traffic flows
through... that's another story completely. =) The proxy array here
processes more then 13 million http and ftp requests and passes more then
75GB of data per day. Microsoft Proxy Server wasn't necessarily designed
for that kind of load, and we have had our share of growing pains, but
nothing that wasn't overcome with a little work. Pricing wasn't even close
to a Sun or IBM RS/6000 solution because of Microsoft's educational pricing,
and 100% of the (Intel based) hardware purchased being on educational
contracts which were bid on by various vendors. I agree that in the private
sector, a Microsoft solution might not be the cheapest solution, but I deal
in education, with educational pricing. =)

Thanks,
Abe
