I did use a simple shell script on a solaris machine (Not tested on a
firewall but I guess it would work).
Did a netstat -I on the interface in a continous loop, watched the increase
in input packets. If there
are no input packets then did a ping to a device on the same network ( say a
router ) and watched for
incoming packets. If there is an increase dont do anything if there is no
increase in packets bring down
that interface and do an "ifconfig up" on the other interface.
You might want to plumb the second NIC in advance cause firewall wont let
you plumb the interface when
it is up.
You might face problems if you are using the same IP and same ether address
and the NIC is connected
to a switch like C100 (piece of crap wont drop the MAC on the port to which
the old NIC is connected).
