Just a quick thought:

There are updated drivers for the Hme and qfe NICs.
You can get them from sunsolve.sun.com -- if you have
SUN support. Hope so!

Are you on a switch? Turn OFF auto-neg on both switch
and NICs, and force 10 (or 100) and HDX or FDX.

Are you using NAT? Do you have a NAT rule to NOT NAT
local IPs to DMZ and back? This is recommended in the
book, and makes sense.
