What does your $FWDIR/conf/external.if contain?

It's the oposite of that. You tell it what your external
interface is. The referenced file above tells the fw
what the external interface is. All else is considered
internal.

btw, You specify it by the interface, not IP(e.q. on my Sun
it's qfe0).
