We've been experiencing some weird problems in connecting to SMTP servers
and finally found a solution. However, it seems odd.

The problem we've had is our servers were able to establish TCP connections
to the remote SMTP site but the 220/banner wouldn't ever arrive. We traced
the problem down to a need for us to have ident/auth running on our
firewall. Well, rather than doing that (we didn't see a need), we set the
firewall to reject auth requests (TCP port 113). Now that we reject ident,
we never have the timeout waiting for 220 banners.

Anyone seen this before? I didn't find any searches I thought were relevant
on both the CP site and Phoneboy's FAQs.
