As others have said, this could be a DNS problem but you would see the same 
connection problem with telnet.

I had a similar problem with ftp taking upto 10 times longer through
a Sun E250 with FW-1 ver 4.0
Problem turned out to be auto-negotiate set on the adapters. Used
ndd -set to set adapter speeds to 100fdx and then set the same on network 
switch.
