Mark,

the problem was that the sendmail box (on the dmz) did not accept smtp on 
the network interfaces. It was a new "feature/fuckup" in RedHat v7.1 so you 
have to edit /etc/mail/sendmal.mc and put the following line in the config 
file.
---
dnl DAEMON_OPTIONS(`Port=smtp,Addr=127.0.0.1, Name=MTA')
---

then regenerat the sendmail.cf with 'm4 /etc/mail/sendmail.mc > 
/etc/sendmail.cf' and restart sendmail.

and then just configure sendmail as usual.
