Like .html and .php. The idea is to make it as easy and natural as possible for dreamweaver designers and the like to work at the 'view' / 'template' level.

In general, the view templates should always follow the same name format when they are connected to a specific Controller and Action. However you can use any format for view templates you include/ render explicitly from another view template.
