Thanks Paddy, And thanks for the 'Complex Views with the Zend Framework ' series of blog posts way back in 2007 which explained so much of what was missing from ZF V1.0 and what strategies could resolve it. Kept me sain when I thought complex view would never be possible.
Your points have confirmed my understanding. I wish I hadn't used the action stack extensively and I'd be interested to see how much I could optimise the site by refactoring into view helpers (I bet I will do a load of work and won't notice any difference, ah well, suppose I should always strive for good design). One bit that I would like you to expand on: "I would also encapsulate a core response access class as a View Helper" How would that work and why?
