Actually that is not a weired thing to do. What it does is assigns a value of expression to a variable and checks if its true.
This not a very good practice since it makes your code harder to follow for those who haven't written it. Maybe that is why ZendStudio showse warning messages. Still this is absolutely valid and is used even in the reference guide examples.
