Firstly let me start by wishing everyone on this list a Happy New year.
Secondly I would like to say to Mike, thank you sincerely for the work you have
done on fwknop and SPA in general. We spend far to much time complaining that
this or that won't compile, or that PGP keys aren't working, and that the SPA
doesn't appear to be a valid packet, and we do not spend enough time to thank
all those who contribute to make the product a great one. SO Mike, thank you
for all the time you spend on this, and the copious amounts of time you spend
investigating our complaints when things go wrong :)

This post is not about fwknop, and is therefore completely off topic. Consider
this fair warning not to bother wasting time reading further than this :)

So for those of you who don't know me, let me tell you a bit about myself. I
have been formally in the industry for 20 years, I have extensive experience in
a number of disciplines in the industry, Security being one, Networking being
another. I can even write code, although I would not consider this one of my
mainstream skills (I actually wrote the first GUI fwknop client for windows,
way back, before others did it way better than I could :)). Anyhow, back to my
problem. I visited the USA in 2006 I was in New York and North Carolina
(Raleigh)and I fell in love with the country in North Carolina. So I decided
that I would emigrate there. Putting it on the back burner for 8 years I
decided that this year is the year that I make that dream come true.

This is where things get interesting and logically absurd. So I decide to do
some research as to what I require, since my 10 year business VISA is not the
correct one to do any work in the US. I come to the stark realization that
there is so many different Visa's to choose from, and 90% of them are not
applicable to my circumstances, so I decide that an immigration lawyer is the
right thing to get, so I duly get one, and I get told the following by him.

"Hi Sean,

Thank you for your enquiry. We have received your questionnaire and advise
that based upon the information you have furnished , we believe you would be
eligible for an H-1 visa, or equivalent. An H-1 visa is a specialized
professional visa. You would have to have a sponsor in the USA who has made
you a job offer and who is prepared to sponsor you for the position. Should
you be able to secure the job offer, please revert to us so that we may assist
you in this regard."

Alright, now on to finding someone who can help with this... (This is where the
problems start).

I start with recruitment agents, since they can obviously help with this ....
So here is the reply (sanitized to protect the innocent)

Hi Sean,

I appreciate you reaching out to me. I'd certainly like to assist you however I
can. Unfortunately, the company I work for, XXXXXX, is someone limited in the
ways we can work with non-citizens. Namely, we're unable to provide
sponsorship. If you are able to acquire a work visa, or other status that
doesn't require sponsorship by an employer, then we would absolutely be able to
place you out with our clients."

So alright, on to the big companies that could perhaps provide sponsorship.
What I have come to determine is that there are only a small number of
companies that actually do this, so I get a number of names of these companies,
and browse the job postings. All of them have web pages which allow you to
fill in your resume or apply online, and all of them ask you as part of the
process whether or not you can legally work in the USA. So having to answer No
at this juncture is the ticket to some HR droid, which informs them to place my
application into file 13. (I have to assume this because, given the number of
applications I have filled in (hundreds) vs the number of invites for interview
(even telephonic) I have received (zero) it is the only logical assumption I
can make).

Ok, so am I the only one that sees a circular reference here? To get a Visa I
need a Job, and to get a Job, I need a Visa. Seems like the only way to
circumvent this problem is to know the CEO, or COO, or VP, or President, or
Head of HR, at a company that is willing to Sponsor someone who can really make
a difference to their company. Is their anyone on this list that knows someone
like that??

</rant>

Ok, enough of the ranting:)

Regards Sean
