(The book Michael is referring too -- it and its sequel are highly
recommended, BTW -- is Jon Bentley's _Programming Pearls_; it turns
out that this misspelling was common in pre-v4 English.  You might
prefer to get the 2nd edition, which is fairly recent.   And you can
