That's a very strange problem... The first thing I would do is take out the 
motherboard and inspect the Ethernet connector, perhaps one of the pins has 
come loose, or is shorting with another pin. 

Have you tried swapping HD's in both Lombards? That would eliminate software as 
a problem. 

You could also try all the standard resetting procedures. (PRAM, PMU, Reset 
button, and NVRAM if you can on that model.)
