I had this happen with my Pismo a while back.  My local Apple shop replaced
the logic board and the power manager (board?) and did a clean system
install.  One of those or the combination of the three fixed the problem.
It, too, was under warranty so all was covered.

Mine was both plugged in and battery.

And rebooting never helped my problem.

Sounds like we have similar symptoms.  My favorite tech seemed to think it
was software related.  Maybe try the clean install first?  At least that's
quick and somewhat easy with Clean Install Assistant.
