There were severe problems with a run of batteries for the colored iBooks (up to 466Mhz). The Battery Reset application reportedly helped some people. IIRC Apple brought out a new battery version at a certain point which reportedly solved the problems: not charging, running down very quickly, appearing dead after a few weeks of use, etc. Smalldog was selling these faulty batteries at very low prices last year; more specifically, they said they got a whole batch from Apple that they found to be faulty. Smalldog blamed Apple, and said Apple refused to recognize the problem or take back the batteries. Smalldog offered store credit, though shipping the defective item back to them was the buyer's responsibility. As always, buyer beware.
