IMHO there isn't a single 'Right way' to do this. If you amp stages are such that any input beyond your volume's mid point causes clipping or saturation, then it will sound distorted and choppy. Brian is right about one thing though, signal to noise ratio is important. Once you have found the highest input signal without distortion, leave it alone and adjust the volume from the amplifier. In short, find an acceptable volume on the pismo, then use the volume control on the stereo. Sounds to me like you were already on the right track anyway.
