Jeff- This seems consistent with a hardware failure in your <something something> (I can't remember what it's called, but it provides power to the screen.) The same thing happened to my ThinkPad from work with turning down the screen brightness being the same workaround. I would get it repaired before it goes out of warranty.
My 2001 iBook screen has started to flicker just a bit when it comes out of sleep. If I lower the brightness 1 level it stops, but I don't like to do that. It's under warranty for a few more months. Is this something I should get fixed now? It's almost imperceptible, but it worries me that it might get worse, that it's a bad omen.
