Thanks Laurent, I am running 8.6 and always try to let air circulate under the 'book. As it happens the Wallstreet just came back from Powerbook Parts (new hinges and 256 K ram). They included a procedure for re-starting after having the battery out for a week. It said to plug in the adapter and press "on" and the fan would come on for 5 seconds which it did.
