Thanks to everyone for their suggestions and I finally took the Western Digital drive out of the cage it was in and put it in a brand new cage and all the data are there and it the drive works like a honey.
Odd, I never thought that I would have problems with my backup drive before I had problems with my primary system. So, feeling full of success and all fat and knowledgeable for doing all those disconnects and connects and actually have the damned thing work, my next project is going to be to put a nice neat 30 gig disk in my Pismo. Does anyone have a used 30 gig that is quiet? d, wondering what happens to all those disks that people trade up from.
