I successfully replaced the LCD panel (found it on eBay for $360) on my
Lombard the first time I ever opened any kind of PowerBook. I am, however,
mechanically inclined (but I refuse to tell you about the time I tried to
fix a vacuum cleaner and ended up with a gaping hole in the bathroom sink!)
and I did have step-by-step instructions. I wouldn't advise a novice to
attempt it without the instructions.
