Your freezes may have nothing to do with the battery. Could be an extension
conflict, a PRAM problem, yadda, yadda.

I solved my little freeze problem on a humble Kanga G3 simply by doing a
clean install of 9.1. When the battery gets too low on operation, I simply
power up the laptop, charge the battery all the way, then pull the AC plug
and let it drain. Plug it in and let it charge... voila!

If things get strange with sleep, fix with resetting the Power Manager
button, hold in until restart. Take battery out of machine for 10, restart.
Good to go. (Different with Duos and 2400s, but that you can look up.)

I've had nothing but good things on laptops from 3400s to 5300s to G3s just
doing the simple stuff. No need to get in a pretzel. Just do the
common-sense stuff.

I had a battery that wouldn't recharge on a 1400. Zapped the PRAM, took the
battery out overnight, put it in next morning, presto. Ran for two years.
