You missed the info that the original poster already has a hardware
bridge (AsanteTalk), so LocalTalk bridge is not called for (and, in
any event, it is only useful if you have a mac with both a localtalk
and an ethernet port).

To make a long story short, there is no reason why it should not work
using Appletalk (but not with file sharing over IP).
I have shared files between a B/W g3 running Jaguar and a Quadra
running 7.5.3, so I know it's feasible.

Things to check:
- Appletalk is turned ON in both machines (it is OFF by default in OS X 10.2)
- Appletalk is set to use the modem/printer port on the powerbook
- file sharing is ON and the hard drive on the powerbook is set be
shared (iirc, select the HD icon in the Finder, and under
Find->Sharing... check "Share this item and its contents")
- cables are ok
- have the user and password set up on the powerbook (iirc, in the
Users&Groups CP, or maybe the File Sharing CP -- depending on the OS
version, don't remember which)

If all is right, in the Jaguar finder Go->Connect to Server... and it
ought to appear. Enter the username and password and the icon for the
powerbook HD should be right there on the desktop.
