Thanks to all who answered. Judging from the reports of those who responded, it looks like my particular drive/card combo is the culprit. Unfortunately, I don't have another firewire device to test with the card at this point in time. I'll soon have a firewire burner to check the operation of the card, hopefully this will verify the card's operation. Either way, it sounds like I might benefit from a visit to eBay or the lem swap list, and pick up one of the recommended cards for OS X. I'll drop a line here again once I've confirmed whether the card is operational or not. Thanks again.
