I guess the sooner, the better! You can go in Mac Help Center, type "partition a disk" and you should get at least one item that briefly describes what is partitioning a drive. You basically split your internal hard disk in smaller parts that are seen as separate disks by the system. I did create 3 partitions on my internal 20 GB drive: 1 for OS X system, 1 for OS 9 system and the remaining for various applications.
