I recently tested two nearly identical drives on my Pismo's internal drive bus (400mhz/640mb ram/9.1.), a 4200 rpm 30GB (DJSA-230) and a 5400 rpm 32GB (DJSA-232) Travelstars using ATTO's ExpressPro-Tools' 'Benchmark Drive' utility. Both are 66.6 Ultra-DMA mode 4 mechanisms and both have 2MB of cache.

I haven't any 7200 rpm laptop drives so I can't comment on their speed. The Pismo's internal ATA bus can handle an actual throughput of greater than 60mb/s, suggesting a 7200 rpm drive would provide considerably greater speed than either of my test examples. Heat output can usually be deduced by checking the prospective drive's power consumption specs. Generally, energy in = heat out. Comparing one's current 4200 or 5400 rpm drive's specs with those of the 7200 rpm drive should give at least some idea of how hot the faster drive will get. hth, Dan K ................................. http://macdan.n3.net/ carracho://dankephoto.dhs.org:9700 hotline://dankephoto.dhs.org:9500 ................................. -- G-Books is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
