Subject: Lombard HD upgrade: IBM Vs. Toshiba

hello list,

I've read great reports from this list about the IBM (Hitachi) Travelstar
40GNX (5400 rpm) and I wonder if anyone would know how it compares to the
Toshiba 40 GAX (also 5400 rpm but 16 MB cache as opposed to 8 MB of the
IBM). I was about to shell out for the 40GNX, but the 40GAX comes at the
same price tag and performance should in principle be superior. Also
comments on the Toshiba 60GAX are welcome.

Upgrading stock 4GB Toshiba MK4309MAT (which I can barely hear while
searching) in 333 MHz Lombard 192 MB RAM (soon to be 348).

Bare Feats did a comparison a while ago, and found that the lBM was actually faster or at least the equal despite the smaller cache.
I have a 20GB 5400 rpm Travelstar drive in a Lombard - I can hear it spinning, but I think I'm becoming rather sensitive to any noise. I also have a Pismo with a 20GB 4200 rpm Travelstar that is virtually silent. That's nearly computing bliss.
