but I can't understand why a firewire or USB external 40gb HD, that comes in
a cool case, runs at 7200rpm, comes with free software and cute accessories,
etc, etc, is $20-30 less than:
a) the external might be 3.5" - 3.5" drives are significantly cheaper than 2.5" (laptop) drives, and
b) even if the ext drive has a 2.5" mech, it might be a thicker drive, as there are no space constraints (unlike inside your laptop). The thinner drives on average have fewer platters for a given capacity, hence greater areal density -> more expensive.
Just a couple of thoughts.
