I've recently replaced the internal drive in my G4 Powerbook 800 (OS 10.2.6) and I'm now trying to use the old 40MB drive in an external housing. I've bought a housing with a USB 2 connector (another story) and fitted the drive. Do I need to set the jumpers to force it to be a slave drive (or set to Cable Connect) or is this just a PC thing? The drive didn't show up on the desktop and then began an ominous clicking sound. Does anyone have any experience of this?

You shouldn't need to change the jumpers. Leave it as master and don't set the cable select jumper.

Is this housing bus-powered or does it have its own power supply? If you have the option of either, try using the built-in power supply rather than bus power.
