I've installed one of the Matshita combo drives below (UJDA740) in my Pismo
running OS9.2. The instructions at
http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/PB_G3/oem_combo_drives/build_guide/ build_combo_dr
ive.html were helpful.

Now I have 2 questions:

(1) The OS9.2 built in disc burner software will not recognize this. Toast
does. The www.xlr8yourmac.com site provides a slightly altered driver file
for the Matshita combo drive UJDA710. Can this be further altered for the
UJDA740?

(2) How do I tell whether the drive has been set to master or slave? Is
there something in the OS Apple System Profiler? Does it matter whether the
drive is slave or master for a Pismo?

Thanks

Leslie Burkholder

I bought a UJDA720 on eBay about a month ago ($50), it was made for an HP and came with the HP faceplate. I had to drill another hole to mount the Pismo faceplate and then slot the metal part of the carrier, but not too much work.
As far as drivers, the XLR8 document can be edited - just change the 710 to 740. You can open the file in a text editor like SimpleText. I did that for my 720 in both OS9 and OSX and now it's supported natively. Toast saw it fine before, btw.
The drive now resides in my wife's Pismo - I made sure to get a Matshita drive because I knew they would be easiest to make the faceplate work, and she wouldn't go for just a bare drive in there.
