Actually, you were not wrong. Rather, what Eugene has uncovered is a discrepancy in how Apple refers to the Pismo and, I believe, a mistake on that particular tech note in naming the computer as the "Powerbook G3 Series (Firewire)".
I did a little research on this because, quite frankly, I'm sick of being confused about what's what and I have long heard and considered the Pismo NOT to be a member (offically) of the "Powerbook G3 Series" of computers despite the fact that it, obviously, is a G3 Powerbook. However, the following line is cut and pasted directly from the Pismo Service Manual (and it should be noted here that the title of the manual is "Powerbook (Firewire)".
"PowerBook (FireWire) is the latest addition to the PowerBook G3 Series of computers."
The conclusion I draw (this is clearly my OPINION) from this is that while the official Apple name for this computer is "Powerbook (Firewire)", it is still considered to be a member of the Powerbook G3 Series of computers. However, as I had pointed out in a previous email, the label on the Pismo clearly says only "Powerbook" as compared with the Lombard which is specifically labeled as "Powerbook G3 Series" and the previous G3 Powerbooks are labeled as "Macintosh Powerbook G3 Series" (I don't have a Kanga so I'm not sure how that machine was labeled).
What this all adds up to, again in my opinion, is... hello Apple, could you make it any more confusing? All this just to figure out what computer you are dealing with and what technical information relates to that computer? Maybe a better system in the Apple Tech Notes would be to require that they always designate what models they are referring to by number rather than by name as long as the names seem to be somewhat arbitrary (and thus confusing) in their use.
By the way, I submitted a bug report regarding this tech note to Apple to see what their response is regarding this (specifically, pointing out that the "Powerbook G3 Series (Firewire)" was never a model of computer made by Apple). I'll let you all know (I know you are all anxiously waiting with baited breath to hear) what I find out if Apple responds.

Symptom
If a serial or LocalTalk device is connected to the S-Video port on the PowerBook G3 Series (Bronze Keyboard and FireWire) or PowerBook G4, the computer will not startup properly. The Mac OS splash screen and extensions along the bottom of the screen do not appear during startup. When the desktop loads, there is no menu bar however some icons may appear on the desktop area.
