Subject: CardBus USB2

Hi

Just a quick note to say that I have just bought a Belkin USB 2.0
Cardbus adapter, for which the box has no mention of Mac OS
compatibility (and neither has the Belkin site, for that matter).

It worked right out of the box on my 15" TiBook, running 10.2.6.

(If anyone is wondering why would I want/need usb 2, let me add that
it is meant to be used with my wife's wallstreet, which, of course,
lacked usb of any sort; so I might as well skip 1.1 and get a usb 2
card for very little more)

Hi Luis,

I looked at this model to use on my Wallstreet as it looked very neat
and compact but as it had no listing for Mac OS I opted for the USB
1.1 Belkin model. I would like to know if it is indeed running as a
USB 2 as I thought that the Mac OS did not cover USB 2. Could it
be that it is just running as a USB 1.1.

If you get around to trying it in the Wallstreet just let us know if
it indeed runs OK, I just might consider buying one.

I tried it in the Wallstreet and it worked beautifully, but I have no way to check whether it really can work as USB 2 proper (I don't have any USB 2 peripherals). Anyway, as USB 2 support is expected to improve at OS level, it seems likely to work soon if it is not already (better USB 2 support was one of the things mentioned in the now pulled 10.2.8 update).

Yesterday I got an IOGear USB 2.0 card. Both their website and package list it as for OS 8.6 through X (with the usual caveat about OS X required for USB 2.0 features). It was $37 at www.thenerds.net, which was the best price I could find for a USB 2.0 card that the manufacturer claimed OS 8.6 compatibility on. Some other cards were touted as being OS 8.6 compatible by the vendor but not by the manufacturer. While they likely are compatible, I'd prefer it if the manufacturer supports it.

If you recall I was looking for a way to use both a 802.11b PC Card and a USB card (without dongle). I originally had a Orinoco card which has a raised antenna so it can't fit under a USB card with connector housing. I got a Proxim Skyline card which has a thin antenna and fits under the IOGear card. I watched the wireless signal strength when I inserted the IOGear card and the signal strength dropped about 13 dB. Not to bad.

There was one particularly nice touch in this card: it comes with an external power supply (and a connector for it between the two usb ports), so it can provide power to bus-powered devices, if needed. I was able to scan without plugging the power supply, and was able to download pictures from my digital camera with the power provided by the card's power supply.

The Scanner is no doubt line powered and the camera is probably running off it's own power too.

But In my tests I was able to run a track ball and either a web cam or a flash memory reader off the IOGear card. This card will take an external power supply but doesn't include one. I figure I can always use a hub instead.
