So, I merely tapped the back of the display and the picture returned. Any clues?
That sounds like a loose LCD cable. You could try taking it apart and securing the connection, but these cables are extremely fragile. If it's not the connector that's loose, you probably have a slight (microscopic, even) crack or break in your cable that will positively get worse if you try to "fix" it....
